The University's modern roots lie in Sunderland Technical College which opened in 1901.
he University celebrated a centenary of teacher education in 2008, 150 years of art and design in 2010, 90 years of pharmacy in Sunderland in 2011, and in 2012 celebrated its 20th year as a university.Sunderland Polytechnic was established in 1969 and became the University of Sunderland in 1992.
he University has three campus developments, one in the city centre, a multi-million pound award-winning riverside development, and a third at Canary Wharf in London. The city has a Metro light rail link which provides easy affordable access to the wider North East region. All UK and EU students can enjoy free travel on Metro, bus, ferry and Northern Rail services in their Fresher year, or £500 discount on University of Sunderland accommodation, and discounted travel in all subsequent years of study. The University accepts nationally recognised advanced qualifications and gives equal consideration to academic and vocational qualifications.

Work experience or vocational training may be taken into account, and admissions tutors view each application on merit.
